A couple decides they want to retire in another country one day. So they buy a house in another country a few years before they plan to retire. After all, rates are low and prices won’t get any cheaper. They talk about how they plan to spend a couple of months there every year while they’re still working and how nice it will be to have a place to call home. They plan to rent it out as a vacation rental when they’re not using it. They estimate that they will earn enough rental income to cover the carry costs, build some equity, and eventually move in.
