Matt and I both had fathers from the Silent Generation. They both worked most of their careers as union men. They raised families and were faithful husbands. We both grew up in middle-class suburbs. Our dads were the kind of dads that made sure the lawn was always mowed, the gutters were always clean, and the bills were always paid. They both grew up in the Great Depression and knew the value of a dollar, a good job, and a roof over your head. 

Both men took an early retirement package that included fully funded pensions and healthcare for life. My dad once said about retirement, “I couldn’t wait to wake up and have nothing to do.”

They both loved retirement. And they earned it. For them, and for many others, retirement is a worthy and well-earned goal. 

But many Baby Boomers and GenX’ers are choosing a different path. They are saying no to retirement. And it’s not just about money.
