Recently we read an article about a couple that decided to return to the U.S. after living in Portugal for a few years. 

There are many stories of expats who decide to return home after living abroad. I think those stories are important when you’re considering moving to a new country. Every story is unique and not everyone has the same experience. 

Before we moved to Portugal, Matt and I read every horror story posted to expat Facebook groups. We didn’t want to only hear the rose-colored glasses version. We wanted to prepare ourselves for the reality of living in a new country. Would this be the best decision for us?

We have lived in Portugal for a year. We’ve heard many stories, talked to other expats, and experienced our own ups and downs of living abroad. The expats who are most successful in creating a happy and fulfilling life abroad typically have these three things in common.
