When I was in college, before the internet, a friend of mine had an interesting summer job. She worked for an older man who was a recluse and lived deep in the woods. He wrote a newsletter about his conspiracy theories. She made copies and sent them to his subscribers. (I know this sounds like the beginning of a horror film. Weirdly, it didn’t at the time.)

He made $600k per year.

That man in the woods was my first memory of a successful, independent content creator over 50. Sure, there were lots of older, traditionally published authors. But the idea that someone could sit behind a typewriter, deep in the woods, unbothered by the demands of a boss or publisher or facts, and get paid for sharing his ideas, was a revelation to my young introverted brain.

Times have changed. Today, people share their conspiracy theories on the internet for free. Suckers.

However, more people from the GenX and Boomer generations are turning their ideas, experience, and expertise - in a wide range of topics - into income and a sense of purpose in their third chapter of life.

Last week, we became one of them.
